Porta potty rental for construction sites
Short answer
A construction site needs toilets from the first worker on site. OSHA 1926.51 sets the legal minimum, and the industry standard is one unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service. Published 2026 prices run $125 to $275 per unit per month. Add a hand wash station and place units where the truck can reach them.
This guide goes in the order you make the decisions: count, hand washing, unit types, placement, service, budget. Each step links to the detail if you need it.
1. Count the units
Start with your peak crew, not your average. Two numbers matter:
- The legal floor. OSHA Table D-1: one facility for 20 or fewer workers, then one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers (29 CFR 1926.51(c)). Full breakdown in the OSHA requirements guide.
- The working number. ANSI/PSAI Z4.3: one weekly-serviced unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week, doubled for two shifts (PSAI Guide, p. 9).
| Crew size | OSHA minimum | Z4.3 standard |
|---|---|---|
| 1-10 | 1 | 1 |
| 11-20 | 1 | 2 |
| 21-40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 3-4 |
| 41-80 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 5-8 |
| 81-120 | 3 seats + 3 urinals | 9-12 |
Crews change over a build. A foundation crew of eight becomes forty during framing and finishes. Order for the phase you are in and add units as the headcount grows; the porta potty calculator gives both numbers for any crew size.
2. Add hand washing
OSHA requires washing facilities in near proximity to work with paints, coatings, herbicides or other harmful contaminants, equipped so the crew can actually remove them (1926.51(f)(1)): soap and water, not a can of waterless cleaner. California requires one washing station per 20 workers on every site (Cal/OSHA §1527), and many general contractors require one regardless. On a site without plumbing that means a portable hand wash station, covered in the hand washing requirements guide. Some units have a sink inside; a freestanding station serves more people at once. Published 2026 pricing puts a hand wash station at $50 to $100 a month on top of the toilet rental.
3. Pick the unit types
- Standard porta potty. The default for every jobsite.
- Hand wash station. See above: on most sites it is expected, not an upgrade.
- Porta potty on a trailer. For crews that move: road work, utilities, pipelines. It moves with the crew instead of waiting for a relocation.
- Restroom holding tank. For office trailers with a restroom hookup, sized to the site.
- ADA unit. When anyone on site needs step-free access.
- High-rise units. On tall buildings, ask dispatch about units that can be lifted to upper floors. The alternative is a crew riding the hoist down every time.
4. Place them where the truck can reach
PSAI's planning checklist asks the question that decides most jobsite service problems: can a truck reach the units to provide service, and will the units be stable (PSAI Guide, p. 5)? In practice:
- level, firm ground, off the path of equipment;
- a clear route from the street or site road to the unit, kept clear on service day;
- close to where the crew works, so no one walks across the site every time;
- the hand wash station next to the toilets, not somewhere else;
- gate codes and access hours given to dispatch when you order.
A unit behind a locked gate or a new trench on service day is a unit that does not get pumped.
5. Set the service schedule
Weekly service is standard and usually included in monthly pricing. A unit holds about 200 to 250 uses (PSAI), which is why 10 workers per unit is comfortable and 20 is at the limit. Heat, a second shift or a crew bigger than planned means either another unit or a second weekly visit. Details in how often porta potties are cleaned.
6. Budget
| Standard unit, monthly | $125-$275 per unit (national guide) |
|---|---|
| Standard construction unit, weekly | $135-$195 (national guide) |
| Hand wash station | $50-$100 extra per month (national guide) |
| Extra service visit | $30-$60 (national guide); $75-$150 in CT, NY, NJ |
| Winter antifreeze | $10-$20 per unit per billing cycle (both) |

7. Winter
Below freezing, the tank needs antifreeze or it freezes solid between visits, and hand wash stations with fresh-water tanks need a plan too. Operators bill winterization as a small add-on per billing cycle. Tell dispatch your site's winter months when you order so it is in the quote. More in porta potties in winter.
Mobile crews
OSHA's toilet requirement does not apply to mobile crews with transportation readily available to nearby toilet facilities (1926.51(c)(4)). If your crew moves daily and drives, you may not need a unit. If it parks on a site for days, you do.
Common questions
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
OSHA's minimum is one facility for up to 20 workers. The industry standard, ANSI/PSAI Z4.3, is one weekly-serviced unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week, doubled for two shifts.
How much does a construction porta potty cost per month?
A national 2026 price guide lists $125 to $275 per unit per month, usually with weekly service included. The local operator sets the final price.
Do I need a hand wash station on a jobsite?
If the crew works with paints, coatings or other harmful contaminants, OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) requires washing facilities near the work. In California, Cal/OSHA requires one station per 20 workers on every site.
Where should a jobsite porta potty go?
On level, firm ground, off equipment paths, close to the work, with a clear route for the service truck on service day.
How fast can units be delivered?
Same-day delivery is available in many areas. Call with your address and crew size and dispatch confirms timing.
