How often are porta potties cleaned?

Short answer

The standard is once a week. A vacuum truck pumps the holding tank, refills the chemical charge, cleans the unit and restocks it. ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sizes one weekly-serviced unit for up to 10 workers on a 40-hour week. Busier sites, heat, or events need more units or more visits.

Portable hand wash station with two sinks
Weekly standard service interval
200-250 uses per unit between services (PSAI)
1 per 4 hrs restroom visits by the average user (PSAI)

Weekly service is the default because of tank capacity, not habit. Once you know how many uses a tank holds, you can tell whether weekly is enough for your site, or whether you are about to have a unit nobody wants to open on Thursday.

What happens on a service visit

Units are serviced with a vacuum truck that has at least two compartments: one for waste, one with clean water for recharging the unit (PSAI Guide, p. 6). A visit typically covers:

  • pumping the holding tank;
  • adding a fresh charge, the few gallons of water, biocide and fragrance that sit in the tank to control odor as it fills;
  • cleaning the seat, urinal, floor and walls;
  • restocking toilet paper, and soap and towels on hand wash stations.

Hand wash stations need the same attention. PSAI's guide says outdoor units and hand wash stations need to be sanitized and cleaned at a pace that stays ahead of the problem, which is the whole point of a schedule.

How much a tank holds

These are PSAI's figures (PSAI Guide, p. 6):

Portable restroom capacity, PSAI
Holding tankCommonly 60-70 gallons
Charge in a clean unit5-10 gallons
Service point (60-gallon tank)When 20-30 gallons are present, charge included
Waste per use8-12 oz
Average user1 use every 4 hours
CapacityAbout 200-250 uses per unit

Is weekly enough for your site? Do the math

With one use every four hours, one worker on an 8-hour day uses the unit about twice a day, or about 10 times in a five-day week. That gives a simple check:

Weekly uses per unit on a 40-hour week (1 use per 4 hours)
Workers per unitUses per weekAgainst 200-250 capacity
10About 100Comfortable
15About 150Workable
20About 200At the limit by service day
25About 250Over: add a unit or a second visit

This is why the Z4.3 standard sets 10 workers per weekly-serviced unit: it leaves room for the day that runs long and the crew that is bigger than planned. It also explains the trade off: 25 workers can be covered by three units serviced weekly, or by two units serviced twice a week. The dispatcher can price both.

When a site needs more than weekly

  • Heat. PSAI notes that weather and food and drink can raise restroom visits by 30 to 40 percent, and warmer weather means more units.
  • Multiple shifts. A second shift puts a second day's worth of use on the same tank. Z4.3 doubles the count for two shifts.
  • Crowds arriving at once. An event with a halftime or an intermission fills units faster than the same headcount spread over a day.
  • Multi-day events. PSAI's event chart assumes no service during the event. A festival running several days needs a service schedule, usually overnight.

What extra service costs

Monthly jobsite rentals usually include one service visit a week. Published 2026 prices for an extra visit run $30 to $60 nationally, and $75 to $150 per trip in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey (operator price guides, listed under Sources). Full pricing is in how much it costs to rent a porta potty.

Make service day work

The most common reason a unit goes unserviced is access, not the schedule. If the truck cannot reach the unit on service day because a gate is locked, a trench cut the path or material is stacked in front of it, the stop can get skipped. Keep the path from the street to the unit clear, and tell dispatch about gates and codes when you order.

Common questions

How often are porta potties serviced on a construction site?

Once a week is standard. ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sizes one weekly-serviced unit for up to 10 workers on a 40-hour week.

How many uses does a porta potty hold?

About 200 to 250 uses per unit, per PSAI. A 60-gallon tank should be serviced when 20 to 30 gallons are present.

What is the blue liquid in a porta potty?

It is the charge: a few gallons of water with biocide and fragrance, added at each service to control odor as the tank fills.

Can I get service more than once a week?

Yes. Extra visits are billed separately. Published 2026 prices run $30 to $60 per visit, higher in the Northeast.

Are event porta potties cleaned during the event?

PSAI's event chart assumes they are not, which is why it sizes by headcount and hours. Multi-day events get a service schedule.
